As a MUA who has been working long before Kim.K, instagram, and youtube, I am continually amazed at how my industry has grown, and changed in the last 14 years. One of the biggest changes being the general public gaining accessibility, and knowledge to what once was "professional" techniques, and products. I think that side of the change has been incredible! However, there have been some pet peeves that I have developed as well……one of the being, you guessed it, contouring!
My pet peeve really just lies in the idea that there is only one way to contour, that being the "instagram makeup" look. At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with a heavily sculpted, heavily layered face! It might not be my personal choice, but its JUST MAKEUP! It is meant to empower you, to make you feel good, and it washes off! What bothers me, is when people feel like the only way to look beautiful is that one way. *(Also, heavy contouring is meant for photo shoots. It generally does not read/wear well all day, in sunlight!)
In terms of drawing/painting, contour is just a defined edge, a shadow. Thats all it is! I love contouring. You have to add back in depth, and glow after putting on foundation. It just depends how much depth, and glow you want! Below is an example of my "everyday" contour & highlight.
I used the Tarte Sculptor Sticks with the Tarte Shader Brush to contour/highlight here. Creams will always give a more blended, natural look. Also, be aware of the pressure that you apply with the brush. To create more drama, layer powder over cream. It all just depends how you want to feel on a certain day! There is no right or wrong!
